AnotherVoice

Waxahachie, Texas, March 29, 2005 -- Believing what I was raised to hold sacred, that every voice counts, I've bombarded my local paper for years with letters and op-eds (and been active in politics). Yet here in the heart of everyone's favorite "red state," where it's especially important that another voice be heard, no one seemed to be listening. This is my megaphone.

How Emily's List Lost Me

A long supporter and contributor, I've decided to pack it in with this otherwise excellent fundraising tool. Here's what I wrote:
Re Hillary:
Your decision to support the primary campaign was understandable, I guess, but regrettable. You should have kept your focus on other races, that you did so effectively for so long.
Just because a candidate is female is not the reason to vote for her over others when those others are more worthy—and less encumbered with negatives.
You've lost me.
I'll send my contributions to worthy women; just not through Emily's List.

What's wrong with having "guest" workers?

My objections to the “guest worker” provision in the proposed immigration bill are two:
(1) we already have a guest worker program on the books, which employers apparently find too troublesome to use; and (2) it is not just the dishwasher ranks whose wages will be depressed, but also our professional ranks, from IT people and engineers to nurses and physicians.

The current American way seems to be to pay as little as an employer can get away with, and it can get away with a lot when there is a pool of people for whom even our pitiful minimum wage is more than they make where they come from.

Anti-social issues

I got to thinking that we need to reframe the topic.

We should describe the people who vote based on anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, anti-stem cell research and/or anti-evolution beliefs as what they are: religious voters. Maybe that would raise awareness amongst those who don’t yet feel particularly threatened.

Define the enemy, I say!
