AnotherVoice

Waxahachie, Texas, March 29, 2005 -- Believing what I was raised to hold sacred, that every voice counts, I've bombarded my local paper for years with letters and op-eds (and been active in politics). Yet here in the heart of everyone's favorite "red state," where it's especially important that another voice be heard, no one seemed to be listening. This is my megaphone.

Sarcasm wasted

U.S. Senator John McCain has issued the following in response to a statement by Sen. Barack Obama:

"While Senator Obama's two years in the U.S. Senate certainly entitle him to vote against funding our troops, my service and experience combined with conversations with military leaders on the ground in Iraq lead me to believe that we must give this new strategy a chance to succeed because the consequences of failure would be catastrophic to our nation's security.

"By the way, Senator Obama, it's a 'flak' jacket, not a 'flack' jacket."

But wait.

Let me just point out that (A) McCain’s use of the jacket in question pretty much amounts to “flack,” and (B) my Oxford American Dictionary gives “flack” as the alternate spelling.

Your move, McCain.

Gingrich

After suffering his egotistical blather on Meet the Press today, and wondering at the apparent tolerance of Americans for political rebirth, the phrase that kept popping into my mind was: Who will rid us of this meddlesome priest?

How long will we be in Iraq?

On Face the Nation today Frederick Kagan, knowledgeable supporter of the Iraq “surge,” opined that it would likely be late 2008 before we see real security there.

That raises a question or two, doesn't it?
