AnotherVoice

Waxahachie, Texas, March 29, 2005 -- Believing what I was raised to hold sacred, that every voice counts, I've bombarded my local paper for years with letters and op-eds (and been active in politics). Yet here in the heart of everyone's favorite "red state," where it's especially important that another voice be heard, no one seemed to be listening. This is my megaphone.

Gore, Hillary, the Environment and Everything

Great blog post by Martin Peretz at TNR's The Plank: OK, I'M A GORE FLACK

I especially loved this bit about Hillary:
She is white bread. The only problem for her is that those who eat only white bread probably detest her.

Bush disclosed "secret" years ago

When I saw a video clip of Bush speaking to the press — bragging, actually — about how the U.S. is able to track terrorists' bank transactions, I was stunned. After all the "shame, shame" he and Cheney are dishing out . . .

Here's one account I dug up without much searching, in today's Boston Globe:
But a search of public records -- government documents posted on the Internet, congressional testimony, guidelines for bank examiners, and even an executive order President Bush signed in September 2001 -- describe how US authorities have openly sought new tools to track terrorist financing since 2001. That includes getting access to information about terrorist-linked wire transfers and other transactions, including those that travel through SWIFT.
"There have been public references to SWIFT before," said Roger Cressey, a senior White House counterterrorism official until 2003. "The White House is overreaching when they say [The New York Times committed] a crime against the war on terror. It has been in the public domain before."

And Hillary, too. Please go. Away.

E-mail from Hillary today. Here's her brilliant proposal:
I support . . . a road map for success that will more quickly and effectively take advantage of Iraqi oil revenues, build up Iraqi infrastructure, foster Iraqi civil society, challenge Iraq's neighbors to do more to ensure stability in Iraq and allow our troops to begin coming home....
What's not to love?

Illegal immigration southward?

DETROIT, United States (AFP) - The Ford Motor Co. is considering a 9.2 billion dollar investment in Mexico that would replace nearly half of the production capacity lost as Ford shutters plants in the United States, according to internal documents obtained by AFP.
Read about it here.

According to this report by Agence France-Presse, some 150,000 jobs will be created in Mexico, reducing unemployment by some 15 percent — really good news for Mexico.

But what of the workers here who will lose their jobs? And what of our unemployment rate? We are told the proposed Ford move would cost American auto workers some 25,000 to 30,000 jobs.

What do you suppose would happen if those laid-off workers trekked down to Mexico and sought jobs at the new plant?
